Refere homers twice, Yankees come back to beat Ray 5-4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ( Associated Press) — Aaron Judge hit his major league-best 26th and 27th home runs, Jose Trevino hit a two-run hit that gave New York the lead in the eighth inning, and ” The Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5–4. Wednesday evening.

Judge’s 22nd career multi-homer game helped the Yankees bounce back from a 4-1 deficit after Isaac Paredes hit his fourth home run in two games for the Rays.

Clark Schmidt (4-2) took the win and Clay Holmes scored a scoreless ninth on his 12th save in 13 attempts.

The win was the 18th in 21 games for the Yankees, who held a 12-game lead in East Alabama.

Tampa Bay lost for the eighth time in 11 games, and after losing two of three games to the opponent, the Yankees lost the fourth consecutive series for the first time since August 2017.

Paredes, who homered three times in the Rays’ 5-4 win Tuesday night, hit his ninth homer of the season, ahead of second against starter Jordan Montgomery. Vidal Bruhan added a two-run homer in the same inning to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead.

Rays starter Shane Baz went 4 2/3 innings in his sixth major league start, giving up one run and four hits and scoring six. He hit the umpire with the bases loaded on his last pitch.

The Yankees left the bases loaded in fifth and sixth place, scoring just one run in the process. But Judge, who hit a fourth-round home run off Baz, led in the seventh with another home run off Colin Poche, cutting the Rays’ lead to 4–3.

Trevino’s sixth home run was hit by Ralph Garza, Jr. (0–2) after Isaiah Keener-Falefa led on the eighth run, one of eight hit by Ray’s pitchers in the last five innings.

Montgomery gave up three earned runs for the first time in 14 starts this season. He allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Yankees: RHP Domingo Herman (right shoulder impingement syndrome) gave up one hit in three closed innings in his first rehab start in Class A Tampa.

Rays: SS Wander Franco (right four) hit six innings in the first of three scheduled rehab games with Triple-A Durham. …According to manager Kevin Cash, after his fourth rehab for Durham on Tuesday, Luis Patino’s RHP (left oblique sprain) will need at least three more. … RHP Andrew Kittredge underwent Tommy John surgery.

HOMER PARADE

Paredes became the first player in Ray history to hit a homer in four straight games and the first major league player to do so since Chicago White Sox’s Jose Abreu in August 2020.

Paredes’ home run streak was snapped on Tuesday when he was hit in his fourth plate appearance.
