About 56 percent participated in the electoral contest as the candidate of the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), therefore, the party would have a parliamentary majority in the new five-year term.
The MPLA won the right to hold 124 of the 220 seats, as well as the presidency of the unicameral Congress, winning the elections with 51.17 percent of the valid votes.
For the head of legislation, the organization nominated Carolina Cerqueira, who had until now served as Minister of State for the Social Sector.
For the opposition National Association for Total Independence of Angola, 90 elected representatives will assume their responsibilities, ranking as the second most voted political force behind the MPLA with 43.95 percent of the vote.
Social Renewal, the National Liberation Front of Angola and the Humanists of Angolan parties would hold two seats each to complete the 220 seats.
As informed by the Permanent Commission of the National Assembly, this Friday’s session will also proceed for the selection of the legislative body’s board of directors for the term 2022-2027.
The current Secretary-General of Parliament, Pedro Agostinho de Neri, confirmed that the new delegates would receive a symposium on the institution’s biological structure and operation, legislative procedures and other related matters in the coming days.
The inauguration of the legislators will take place tomorrow at the capital’s Plaza de la Repubblica followed by adornments by the re-elected president, Joo Lourenço, and the vice president, Esperanca Costa, at a ceremony attended by 50 foreign delegations.
The President and Leader of the MPLA reaffirmed the commitment to govern on the basis of the well-being of all Angolans, prioritizing social investments in key sectors such as health, education, energy, water and basic sanitation.
