Republican lawmakers press the Biden administration to be tough on China

Republican lawmakers have called on the Biden administration to tighten its grip on Beijing, saying recent remarks by senior officials have “expressed a failure to recognize the real threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party.”

US climate envoy John Kerry recently said in response to a question about the plight of Uyghurs in China’s western Xinjiang region that “life is always full of difficult choices when it comes to relations between nations” and later “the planet must be protected”. ”

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo also hinted at a desire to improve US trade relations with China. Given the size of the Chinese market, “we need to do business there,” he told The Wall Street Journal on September 24. “Strong trade engagements will help ease any potential tensions” and “prevent unintended conflicts.”

Such comments have caused concern among lawmakers on the China Task Force, a group of House Republicans. In a Sept. 2 statement, Republicans called on the two officials to “immediately review a threatening briefing and broken promises, intellectual property theft, massive economic espionage and the brutal coercion of American citizens” . “

“Unfortunately, the Biden administration has not presented a clear, comprehensive approach to tackling the generational threat of the Chinese Communist Party,” Rep. An email.

Challenges posed by the Chinese regime, ranging from national security to economic, are increasingly worrying Washington.

At a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing last week, FBI Director Christopher Warr testified that the agency was “launching an anti-intelligence investigation into the new China every 12 hours.”

FBI Director Christopher Ware testified during a September 2021 security threat hearing at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, 20 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall warned on Sept. 20 that Beijing is accelerating the modernization of its military in a bid to displace the world’s most influential military power.

“While national security officials such as Director Ray and Air Force Secretary Kendall are warning of a serious threat to U.S. security, other officials are reiterating their denied claim that trade and economic access could make the CCP a responsible stakeholder,” McCall said.

The United States has been involved with China for decades under the idea that the country’s economic liberalization would lead to greater political independence. The projection has not been implemented, Western officials and experts say, pointing to the deteriorating human rights situation in the country. Washington began to take a hard line on the Trump administration under issues such as Beijing’s unfair trade practices, technology theft, human rights abuses and cyber espionage.

The Biden administration has described its relationship with China as one of cooperation and competition. It also emphasized the need to build alliances with Western democracies to repel the regime’s military and economic aggression. Earlier this month, the United States, Australia and Britain formed a new security partnership centered on the Indo-Pacific Ocean, a deal widely seen as aimed at tackling Beijing’s growing resilience in the region.

Meanwhile, the administration has maintained that it does not want a new Cold War or a confrontation with Beijing.

“While we can discuss in some ways their involvement in the world, we also have some areas where we want to continue working together,” White House Press Secretary Jane Saki told reporters Sept. 20.

President Joe Biden repeated the same compromise message in his first UN speech the next day without directly mentioning China’s name একটি a gesture Sen. The United States has used the same platform to take several jobs.

The recent release of Meng Wangzhou, a U.S. executive at Huawei, followed by the release of two Canadians detained in China, prompted many to question whether there was a secret prisoner exchange agreement between Washington and Beijing. The detention of the two Canadians in Beijing was widely seen as an act of “hostage diplomacy” in response to Meng’s arrest.

Psaki denied any connection between the release of the individuals but confirmed that their lawsuits came about three weeks ago during Biden’s second phone call with Shi.

Xi called on U.S. pressure to strain bilateral relations, while Biden told Xi that he saw no reason to “compete in the conflict.”

Kerry, who only traveled to China in early September, hinted at plans for a third trip next week.

McCall said the White House is wasting time and undermining national security by refusing to acknowledge a history of failure.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arch.) In a nine-minute speech on the Senate floor on Sept. 2, he stressed the scope of the Chinese Communist Party’s threat.

“Whether we like it or not, China is waging a cold war against America … and our way of life for decades,” he said. “The only question is whether we will win or lose.”

He argued that Biden’s speech at the UN was tantamount to declaring China’s significantly ousted president “his capitulation to the Chinese Communist Party.”

“We are world leaders, not China, we don’t need China’s forgiveness or grace,” Cotton said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Epoch Times.
