Rishi Sunak: Whitehall probe begins into leak of tax status of chancellor’s wife

A Whitehall investigation has been launched into the leaking of the tax status of Rishi Sunak’s wife a week after the chancellor’s approval rating was dealt a significant blow.

Akshata Murthy announced theatrically on Friday that it will pay UK taxes on its global incomeAdding in a statement that she did not want the issue to be “a distraction for my husband”.

The revelation that she had until then been “non-domesticated” for tax purposes in Britain led the chancellor to face accusations of hypocrisy given the recent tax hike imposed by the Treasury.

Labor said her family had potentially saved tens of millions of pounds as a result of Ms Murthy’s arrangement.

Experts have estimated that Ms Murthy, who is an Indian national, saved £20 million as a result of not paying taxes on her shares in Infosys, an Indian IT company founded by her father.

Mr Sunak has seen his approval ratings drop in light of reports that came hot on the heels of a spring statement that saw Critics accuse him of not doing enough to help families with a cost of living,

This morning, a new poll from Opinium shows a three-digit drop to 28%. His disapproval rating has risen eight points to 43%, for a net approval rating of -15.

What do we know about the investigation?

The Whitehall investigation is already underway, the PA news agency understands.

It will look into how Ms. Murthy’s taxes were first reported to The Independent.

According to The Sunday Times, the chancellor’s team believes a Labor supporting officer named “Red Throat” is responsible for the leak.

The newspaper quoted a senior government official as saying: “There is going to be a full Cabinet Office and HM Treasury investigation into who had this information and if anyone has requested that information.

“Disclosure of the tax status of a private individual is a criminal offense.”
