Robbery, shooting near Oakland Institute of Technology High School, under investigation

Oakland – Oakland Tech High School was briefly locked down Wednesday afternoon after a student was robbed across the street from campus and at least one shot was fired by a suspect, authorities said.

No harm done.

Authorities said a car stopped in front of the school at about 1:07 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Whitmore Street and Broadway. Four people came out and at gunpoint took away his shoes and a sweatshirt with a hood from the 15-year-old student.

Police said that when the suspects bumped into some of the other students as they left the scene in a car, one of the suspects fired at least one shot before they drove north on Broadway.

The school was locked for about 20 minutes.

“(Wednesday) afternoon at about 1:15 pm, we received a report of a gunfire near campus, about a block away. “It was just in time for lunch,” said Auckland Institute of Technology director Richard Fairley in a statement to the school community.

“For security reasons, we placed all the students who were near the school in the main campus building and called 9-1-1.”

He rightly added that the employees announced the blocking of the speakerphone system. The school reopened after police informed them that the suspects had left and the campus was safe.
