Roden stays fast at home, trails Pirates 5-3

SAN FRANCISCO ( Associated Press) – Carlos Rodan conceded two runs in six innings, Mike Yastrzemsky scored three as the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 on Friday night.

Just 7–14 since the All-Star break, the Giants break a four-game losing streak at home as they try to stay within striking distance of the postseason. At 55-57, they are 7½ games behind the San Diego Padres for the National League’s third and final wild-card spot.

Rodan (11-6) gave six hits, hit seven and was not allowed to walk. His 2.95 ERA ranks ninth in the league. The All-Star left-hander has been particularly quick at home, where he improved to 6-1 with a 1.89 ERA, fifth best among the majors.

Despite homers from Rodolfo Castro, Ben Gemmel and Greg Allen, Pittsburgh (45-68) lost for the sixth time in eight games. Right-hander Bryce Wilson (2–7) conceded defeat, scoring four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Although the pirates were not charged with an error, it was a bold night to protect them.

First baseman Michael Chavis made a fine stop on Yastrzemsky’s base-loaded chopper in the third but bounced his throw home and scored a run. Left fielder Tucupita Marcano dropped a false pop-up in the fourth when he collided with teammate Castro. Then Brian Reynolds misjudged Yastrzemsky’s deep flight into the center in the fifth that went for a two-out RBI double and a 4-1 San Francisco lead.

Yastrzemski entered a night of .169 since June 1, the lowest among qualified major league hitters. But he broke the scoreless tie in the second, hitting the first pitch of Wilson’s innings over the wall in left-centre for his 12th homer.

The Giants got a clutch job from eighth-place lefty reliever Alex Young as they held on to a 4-3 lead. With a base load and an out, Young knocks Allen out and takes Marcano to second from grounder.

Luis Gonzalez added RBI twice in the eighth to provide some cushion, and Camilo Doval saved his 16th.

Pirates: RHP Yeri de los Santos (right shoulder stretch) was placed on the 60-day IL, ending the rookie season. De los Santos issued three walks and charged four without a record on Thursday against Arizona. An MRI on Friday confirmed a shoulder strain. De los Santos, 24, went 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA and three saved 26 appearances. Pittsburgh selected the contract of RHP Austin Bryce to take their roster spot.

Giants: LHP Thomas Szapucci was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento and selected to RHP Unie Marte. Szapucci, acquired in a trade-deadline deal that sent Darin Roof to the Mets, dropped Allen’s homer in the seventh to shave off the Giants’ lead 4-3. He worked primarily as a starter in the Mets system, but helped him consolidate an overworked Giants bullpen, finishing 12th in the ERA (4.45) in the National League entering Friday night. will be called to.
