Rondo Memorial Plaza Will Hold ‘Every Brick Counts’ Ceremony on Wednesday

Rondo Center of Divers Expression will hold an “Every Brick Counts” ceremony this Wednesday to install engraved brick pavers honoring families, friends, businesses and organizations from the heyday of the community.

The event will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at 820 Concordia Ave in St. Paul. Everyone is welcome to participate and celebrate the impacts of the Rondo Neighborhood on the city of St. Paul.

A predominantly African American neighborhood, Rondo was decimated by the construction of Interstate 94 in the late 50s and 60s, displacing the community. The Monument History Walk at Rondo Plaza is a public monument dedicated to a community.

Sales of engraved bricks – to add to the history walk – have been higher this year, as the event was canceled last year, according to the organizers. The purchased bricks honor workers at the African American Packing Plant in South St. Paul, as well as seven generations of the Payne family, Major Taylor Cycling Club, Buzz Brown, and more.

The event will be attended by officials and people buying engraved bricks. There will also be musical entertainment by Wesley “Wes Smooth” Smith from the Twin Cities Radio Network.

Safety protocols will be in place, such as masking and distancing, to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
