In addition to lying that the presidential election was rigged, inviting supporters to “wild” times to D.C., and asking people to march to the US Capitol and “fight like hell” on January 6, 2021 Donald Trump had absolutely “nothing to do” with the events of that day, insisted his former personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani was responding to a dramatic hearing last Thursday by the House Select Committee to uncover plans for the event and overturn the Trump-led election before the violence. Giuliani called the hearing an “embarrassment”.
“I assure you, as I assured you [the] Stolen election, this was not a rebellion or a coup,” Giuliani said on his podcast, “Common Sense” on Saturday.
“The president had nothing to do with it, and none of the people close to the president did,” he said. “The way they are being treated is a sign of the fascist-type government that the Bidens, the Pelosis, the socialists, who have always preferred a fascist-type government….”
Giuliani called the violence at the Capitol a “spontaneous” riot. He also suggested, without evidence, that left-wing Antifa was significantly involved in an incident that Trump described last week as “the greatest movement to make America great again in our nation’s history”. .
Giuliani himself was deeply involved in the efforts to overthrow the 2020 election. He was reportedly a key player in introducing slates of fake voters to replace legitimately elected voters in some states in order to overthrow the results.
Republican voters declared themselves “duly elected and qualified” and sent signed certificates to Washington claiming that Trump had been confirmed as the winner in the five states he had actually lost.
“This is not political theatre. This is not protected speech,” Nessel said. “This is an attack on the fabric of our system of government.”
Last week the Disciplinary Branch of the District of Columbia Bar Association filed ethics charges against Giuliani, alleging that he promoted claims of baseless voter fraud in Pennsylvania.
Last June, an appeals court suspended Giuliani from practicing law in New York because he made false statements to get courts to reverse Trump’s defeat. His DC law license was also suspended.
