Sam Altman says Elon Musk was an idiot but also a talent magnet at OpenAI

Sam Altman y Elon Musk They don’t have the best work and friendship relationships. This became clear over time as both characters revealed more details about their breakup as partners.

Not everyone knows it, but both topics have a close past, having been involved in the development of OpenAI. The company focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems, eventually programming ChatGPT and DALL-E.

Musk was one of the early partners and investors in this project, along with Sam Altman and other Silicon Valley figures such as Peter Thiel, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston.

As we previously reported in a recent Chronicle, things went out of proportion and harmony when Elon Musk attempted to take full control of OpenAI, which resulted in his expulsion from the company and the company having no access to the tycoon’s funds.

Luckily, Altman and the rest of the team found a way to keep the company afloat and then create the boom we saw around ChatGPT. A turning point that Musk completely missed.

Elon has now founded his own artificial intelligence company and has been a harsh critic of OpenAI at every opportunity. Today the CEO, who is also his ex-boyfriend, responded to these tirades.

A “talent magnet” and “an idiot”: This is what Sam Altman thinks about Elon Musk and his time at OpenAI

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and currently responsible for the future of ChatGPT, spoke about the history of the company in the latest episode of the podcast In Good Company with Nicolai Tangen, without avoiding the topic of Elon Musk.

There, the executive briefly and succinctly described what the experience of working with Elon was like, choosing a series of descriptions with peculiar adjectives to describe the experience:

“Elon was definitely a magnet for talent and attention, and he also has some real superpowers that were of great use to us in those early days, aside from all that stuff.”

In the episode, Altman goes into a lot of detail about the company’s current situation and the challenges of all kinds that it faces. The strange thing, however, is how warmly he addressed the topic of Elon Musk.

Especially if we remember that in March of the same year, 2023, the head of OpenAI was interviewed on the “On With Kara Swisher” podcast, where his opinion of Musk was harsher:

“I mean, he’s an idiot, no matter what you want to say about him, he has a style that I wouldn’t want for myself.”

Is Sam Altman relaxing his stance on Elon Musk? Time will give the answer.
