San Bernardino County Reports Fewer Hospitalizations Due to COVID-19

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in San Bernardino County has been steadily declining, according to county and state figures released Monday, Oct.25.

According to the state, 268 coronavirus patients have been hospitalized and 73 in intensive care units. This means there were 8% fewer COVID-19 patients in hospitals and 15% fewer intensive care patients across the county compared to last week.

The weekly comparison of cases, deaths, and test results has been skewed because the county did not release coronavirus data on Monday, October 11, due to the Columbus Day holiday.

The county also recorded 462 deaths in the past week. County spokesman David Werth attributed the high number of deaths to a discrepancy between the way the state and county reported deaths. Werth said a month ago that county officials noticed that the state was reporting “significantly more deaths in our county than we do.”

County officials have learned that the state has changed the way deaths are reported to include suspected COVID-19 deaths, which are still under investigation. The county did not report deaths until they were confirmed as COVID-19 deaths, Werth said, adding that the confirmation process could take weeks or even months.

The additional deaths reported on Friday, Oct.22, actually occurred in the past 18 months, and the county figures match those of the state, he said.

Here are the latest numbers. Vaccination and hospitalization data are from the state as of Sunday. Other numbers were released by the district on Monday.
