San Jose: Standoff involving armed person ends, person in custody

SAN JOSE – A 38-year-old man, allegedly armed and taken hostage, was taken into custody by Santa Clara County sheriffs deputies after a 14-hour standoff at a home in East San Jose, authorities said.

MPs were summoned to Block 3000 on East Hills Drive at 11:13 pm Monday to report the riots involving someone with a gun, MP Russell Davis said. They later learned that the man’s elderly father was in the house and was not allowed to leave.

Emergency response and crisis management teams were called to the scene, and the sheriff’s office urged people to stay away from the area. Russell said the negotiators “used various de-escalation methods and negotiating tactics for over 14 hours,” which ultimately led to the man peacefully surrendering to the MPs.

The sheriff’s office tweeted on Tuesday at 1:12 pm that the man was taken into custody and there were no injuries.

The man was taken to the main prison in Santa Clara County in San Jose on charges of assault with deadly weapons, abuse of the elderly, false imprisonment and threats to commit a crime. The man, who was on probation for assault with a lethal weapon, a criminal with a firearm, and domestic violence, was also given a suspended sentence.
