Santa Ana winds are returning to Southern California but with less strength

Fierce Santa Ana winds are forecast for Southern California this week — but they won’t be as strong as last week, which toppled trees and power lines and led Southern California Edison to shut down power for thousands.

National Weather Service meteorologist Casey Oswant said northeasterly winds were forecast for the inland Empire and Orange County beginning Tuesday night, November 30, and moving through Wednesday.

Another Weather Service meteorologist David Sweet said Los Angeles County was expected to get its strongest winds Wednesday morning.

Oswant said the foothills and mountains could see gusts of wind up to 40 mph, especially below the Cajon and San Gorgonio Passes. Most areas will sit in the 15- to 25-mph range.

Meteorologists said that with weaker winds, humidity was not forecast to be as low and forecasters were not anticipating the need for wildfire warnings.

“Santa Ana winds – we’ll get (they) this time of year,” Sweet said. “But the temperature will be around 10 to 20 degrees above normal. It is possible that some records may be broken.”

Wednesday, forecast to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures expected in the high-70s to mid-80s in the Valleys and Inland Empire, with some areas such as the Woodland Hills possibly reaching 90 degrees, Sweet said.

Sweet said temperatures inland were forecast to range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. Coastal areas were expected to get in the low-70s.

Sweet said the winds will remain cool late Wednesday, followed by a cooling pattern that will last through the weekend.

Still, even with some dry conditions, Oswant recommends staying hydrated and avoiding exercise during the peak of the afternoon heat.

Last week, SCE shut down power to thousands of residents on Thanksgiving due to gusts of wind, fearing power lines could start wildfire, officials said. Many of those affected were left without electricity on Friday.

According to the SCE webpage, on Monday, no shutoff was considered for this week.
