Santana’s homer rallies Mariners for 4-3 win over Yankees

SEATTLE ( Associated Press) – Carlos Santana fell 0-for-17 with a two-run homer during Seattle’s three-run seventh inning, and the Mariners rallied to beat the New York Yankees 4-3 on Wednesday .

Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 45th homer of the season for the Yankees, who have lost eight of 10.

Thanks to two tense, one-run victories, Seattle took two out of three over New York for the second straight week to win the season series 4–2. The Mariners registered a 1-0 win in 13 innings on Tuesday night. With the Yankees leading the AL East and Seattle in the first AL wild-card spot, the teams could meet in the playoffs again.

Seattle has not lost a series to a team other than AL West-leading Houston since mid-June, when the Los Angeles Angels were dropped four out of five.

Kyle Higashioka pushed a two-run homer on the final pitch from Seattle starter Robbie Ray in 115th and seventh, snapped a 19-innings scoreless streak for the Yankees, and scored the judge’s longball against Penn Murphy (3-0) . This 3-1 later in the frame.

Murphy followed by retired DJ Lemahieu and Anthony Rizzo, Diego Castillo finished a perfect eighth, and Paul Seewald finished ninth for his 15th save.

After exceptional performances from Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and Mariners Luis Castillo on Tuesday night, both Rey and New York starter Nestor Cortés were in great form.

Cortés scored 10 and didn’t allow a hit until Sam Haggerty struck a left-field foul pole with one of the sixth. He was picked up after giving consecutive singles to Ty France and Mitch Hanniger to open the seventh. Hanniger’s hit put France in a 3-2 draw.

Albert Abreu (2-2) dismissed Eugenio Suarez, but left a change in the middle of the plate and Santana did not miss to hit his seventh home run since being acquired by Seattle in June.

Ray conceded three hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He scored seven but went on to a season-high five.

roster reshuffle

Seattle selected OF/DH Kyle Lewis and LHP Brandon Bernardino to Triple-A Tacoma to clear a roster spot for the return of Diego Castillo and utilitarian Dylan Moore.

Lewis, the 2020 AL Rookie of the Year, was struggling badly at the plate after returning from an injury. Lewis was hitting .098 in his last 46 plate appearances with 18 strikeouts.

“Kyle’s tool is the bat and it has been struggling since he got here. Recently, there has been a strike out. I think there is a role for him in our club. But you need to be productive,” said Seattle manager Scott Servais.

Seattle is also taking RHP Chris Flexon to the bullpen. The Mariners picked up a sixth starter when they acquired Luis Castillo at the trade deadline. Servais said Flexon could return to the rotation later in the season as Seattle oversees rookie George Kirby’s innings.
