Schwarber and Realmuto go head-to-head against Musgrove in Fils’ 6-2 win

SAN DIEGO ( Associated Press) — Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer and JT Realmuto added a three-point shot to the Philadelphia Phillies, who inflicted Joe Musgrove’s first loss of the season and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Sun. -Diego Padres on Thursday night.

Musgrove (8-1) saw his ERA go from 1.59, which was the second highest among the big players, to 2.12. The large right-hander from the suburb of El Cajon was activated from the list of those affected by COVID-19 earlier in the day. He was named last Friday, the day after seven strong innings in a win over the Chicago Cubs.

Musgrove had four unsuccessful innings before Odubel Herrera hit an RBI single to tie at 1.

The Phillies then vaulted over Musgrove in the sixth. Bryson Stott hit a double at the start of the match ahead of Homer Schwarber in midfield, his 20th. Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos scored back-to-back single outs before Realmuto landed an opposite field shot from the top of the right field wall. It was his fourth overall result and his first since 26 May.

Musgrove allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings, with one strikeout and a walk. For the first time this year, he allowed more than two earned runs.

The big inning made the winner Ranger Suarez (6-4), who for the first time this season came out in eighth place. He allowed two runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked two.

Eric Hosmer Homered leads second, sixth. The Padres added a run in the eighth at Jorge Alfaro’s Groundout.

Padres slugger Manny Machado missed his fourth game in a row with a sprained left ankle, but did some agility drills and played the ball on the field before hitting a target in an enclosed cage. San Diego manager Bob Melvin was an eager observer from the dugout. “I don’t know how he does it. You actually look at the discoloration, what it looks like, the swelling has gone down, but it doesn’t look like it feels too good,” Melvin said. “I don’t think anything with him at the moment surprises me.”

The Padres believe that Machado, who has an MVP-caliber season, can avoid the injury list. “We’re willing to sit here and wait a few more days to see how he does, even if it’s an unexpected look,” Melvin said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if it happens within those 10 days.”

Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth played a rare game on his boob night, no less. “It’s a goof day, which gives him a little more time to sign a contract, maybe before the game, maybe a little more interaction with the fans,” Melvin joked. The manager said the day off had been planned for some time. “My bad,” he added. DH Luke Voight also received a day off due to a hamstring problem. “It’s not ideal to have a couple of guys, but that’s exactly what we came up with,” Melvin said.

Padres: Added LHP Adrián Morejón to the 15-day injury list with inflammation of the left shoulder.

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola (4-4, 3.11 ERA), brother of Padres catcher Austin Nola, and San Diego LHP rookie Mackenzie Gore (4-3, 3.64) are slated to start Friday night.
