Sir Paul McCartney returns to his ‘early days’ opening act at Glastonbury

Sir Paul McCartney said that his intimate show in Somerset the night before his performance at Glastonbury reminded him of his early days when he was “hot and sweaty”.

The 80-year-old former Beatle performed Friday at the Cheese and Grain entertainment center in Frome, Somerset, in front of a crowd of adoring fans and famous faces, including the late George Harrison’s wife Olivia and pop star Olivia Rodrigo.

The surprise performance comes ahead of his performance at Glastonbury on Saturday, where he will go down in history as the festival’s oldest solo headliner.

Sir Paul wore a blue collarless shirt and blue jeans with a Hofner bass around his neck when he took the stage at Cheese and Grain.

After performing the second song of the set, Junior’s Farm, he greeted the audience with “Good evening Frome, why do I get the feeling we’re going to have some fun!”

The former Beatle performed several of his hits, including “Getting Better”, “Golden Slumbers” and “Out of College”, which he said was the first live performance of the song in England.

After performing his 1970s track “Maybe I’m Amazed”, he said, “It takes me back to the early days, hot and sweaty!”

As he walked off the stage, Sir Paul thanked the crowd, saying: “Thank you people of Frome, we had a great time here tonight. It was a good idea.”

Other celebrities among the crowd included comedian Judd Apatow and his wife and actress Leslie Mann, as well as AC/DC’s Brian Johnson.

The surprise concert was only announced on Thursday night, causing havoc on the roads in the city as fans tried to get their coveted ticket.

A group of locals who had missed the seat waited outside the hall, hoping to catch a glimpse of the former Beatles.

Among the waiting crowd was self-proclaimed superfan Jane Lamb, who brought her Beatles scrapbook she made at the age of eight in the hope that Sir Paul would come out and sign it after his performance.

The Frome native, 68, told the PA news agency: “I think it’s amazing that he’s leading Glastonbury at his age. I’ve heard people say he lost his voice, but I don’t think so.”

Sir Paul is following in the footsteps of the Foo Fighters and Wolf Alice playing Cheese and Grain before their Glastonbury show.

Sarah McDonald was among the lucky few who managed to attend the surprise performance with her family after she was first in line for tickets.

Before the performance, she told PA, “We’re very happy to see him, we’ve been listening to Paul McCartney all day.”

Jackie and Martin Moss and their grandchildren also tried to catch a glimpse of the singer after they missed tickets.

The couple described scenes of traffic in the city as people tried to get tickets, saying, “The roads were rammed, the place was packed, the police had to come, since you had to come in person and get the tickets.”

Jackie also described the Cheese and Grain establishment as “very intimate” and “quite ordinary”, but noted that Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis as a patron seems to be attracting big stars to the establishment.

At the event, security officials asked ticket holders to seal their phones in opaque bags so no recordings or photos could be taken during his surprise speech.

Sir Paul’s Saturday set will be his second performance on the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage since 2004.

This year’s music offering also features headliners Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar, with Diana Ross filling the Sunday Teatime Legends slot.
