Sleeping less than eight hours makes teens overweight and obese

According to a study presented in 2022 by the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), teens who sleep less than eight hours are more likely to be overweight or obese than those who get enough sleep.

In addition, studies show that people who sleep less are more likely to have a combination of other unhealthy characteristics, including excess fat, high blood pressure, and abnormal blood lipid and glucose levels.

Only 19% of children between the ages of 14 and 16 sleep the required number of hours

The study looked at the relationship between sleep duration and health in 1,229 adolescents from public secondary schools in Spain. The participants had an average age of 12 at the start of the study and were assessed for 4 years.

The analyzed data concluded that over 12 years, only 34% of participants slept at least 8 hours per night. data that was reduced to 23% at 14 years and 19% at 16 years. The prevalence of overweight/obesity in each age group was 27%, 24%, and 21%, respectively.

In addition, teens who got more sleep also got better quality sleep, meaning they woke up less during the night and spent more time in bed asleep than those who got less sleep.
