Baril is brimming with good news: the high-end faucet manufacturer had just won a 2022 Red Dot Design Award for its Flora collection when it announced the launch of a new collection designed in collaboration with fashion designer Marie Saint Pierre.

The partnership with Maison Marie Saint Pierre and the Marie collection were unveiled at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, held April 7-10.

“People’s reactions are fun to watch. It really gives us a “wow”! exclaims Marie-Ève Baril, president of Baril, on the phone from the showroom.

Marie Saint Pierre and the Baril team have designed a collection of bathroom faucets whose spherical elements could hardly be refined any further.

Its hot and cold water handles are colored globes that appear to be simply deposited on the surface of the vanity. Independent of the faucet spout and of each other, the two spheres can be installed wherever desired on the furniture.

“Imperfect spheres,” says Marie-Ève Baril. Imperfect like sculptures made by the hand of a man – of a woman, in fact – placed on a pedestal table. “This idea of having an art object in the bathroom was the start of the collection. »

Water, source of inspiration

This collaboration was born during a C2 Montreal event where the entrepreneur met the fashion designer. “In the evening, at home, I said to myself: ‘What an idea it would be for Marie Saint Pierre to make a tap and draw something for us! Tomorrow, if I see her, I’ll run after her and I’ll ask her.” »

The next day she saw her, chased her, asked her. “In a second, she replied: ‘Well yes!’ »

Reading the designer’s website, she realized that they both shared the same values and the same words: timeless design, quality, attention to detail, function, well-being.

“I really gave him carte blanche,” she continues. We agreed on a bathroom collection. »

The fashion designer presented her with five main directions. One of them was retained, to which the designer then devoted herself.

Fashion design and product design are similar, notes Marie Saint Pierre, who is also attending the launch in Toronto.

“It’s the same process of thinking about what is good design, design that will move us, that will not just bring a new product to market, but rather bring a new vision of an object from daily. »

The similarity is all the stronger as she creates her clothes in three dimensions.

“I draw very little. I prefer to mold and work with my hands. »

So she got her hands dirty – literally.

“I worked with modeling clay, with all sorts of objects. I made myself a small workbench of objects that inspired me around water. I had parts of Baril faucets that Marie-Ève had lent me for the reflection work. »

It is in the water that she drew her inspiration.

“I wanted to honor water, to give it a kind of podium. I sculpted an imperfect ball, in which I planted a pipe. The imperfect ball represented a bit of the planet, the pipe extracting water from this planet. It was almost instantaneous: I saw something in there right away. »

The ball and ball were passed to Baril’s designers and technicians.

“Great cooperation”

“My team made drawings, shapes, then we met Marie, summarizes Marie-Ève Baril. It was easy, it was fast. A great collaboration! »

The design and production process took two years. Upon arrival, the ball remained organic.

“When you touch it, it is not perfectly round, describes the president. It was cast by hand, and we made the mold from that. »

A great technical challenge, to which his team devoted a few months.

Authorized retailers will carry the Marie collection over the next few weeks. Unsurprisingly, it is not available everywhere.
