Spain’s sports minister reiterated this Friday that the row over Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales’ kiss with his player Jenny Hermoso could be a “MeToo” moment for Spanish football.
“I think we can say that it’s a MeToo in Spanish football,” Victor Francos, who is also president of Spain’s Sports Council, told reporters hours after Rubiales announced he would not be stepping down.
Spain’s sports minister reiterated this Friday that the row over Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales’ kiss with his player Jenny Hermoso could be a “MeToo” moment for Spanish football.
“I think we can say that it’s a MeToo in Spanish football,” VÃctor Francos, who is also president of Spain’s Sports Council, told reporters hours after Rubiales announced he would not be stepping down.
“There has to be a change. “The government wants to warn, be very clear and say that there are things that cannot happen again,” he added.
Francos said the government would “start procedures” to urge Rubiales to present his point of view before the Spanish administrative court as soon as possible.
He added that the Sports Council could arrest Rubiales if the court decides the kiss violates the Professional Sports Act.
“What Rubiales has done is causing controversy,” Francos said, adding that without a court verdict against him, the FA president could not be arrested.
The global #MeToo movement took off in 2017, fueled by sexual misconduct allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
Women around the world have taken to social media to expose sexual harassment and assault in the workplace, government and academia, sparking investigations and removing high-ranking men from positions of power.
