Spain’s tech talent grows 4% annually

One of the main concerns of companies around the world today is the lack of technology talent. According to the latest Randstad report prepared with the CEOE employers’ association, 75% of companies in Spain are unable to fill vacancies in technology profiles.

According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute, in the second quarter of 2023, 155,797 vacancies were registered in our country. However, according to the latest edition of the report Technological Jobs in the Spanish Labor Market prepared by UGT, since the third quarter of 2019, 230,000 net jobs have been created, reaching one million tech jobs in Spain.

The union warned that “despite the further increase in tech jobs in our country, we are still far from catching up with Europe and other economies.” In other words, despite the growing rate of employee specialization in Spain, at 4.3% per year, this percentage is lower than the technological work done in Germany (5%) or Portugal (4.5%). .

High-skilled unemployed

One of the surprises revealed by the UGT study is that the employment rate of these people with ICT knowledge stands at 85.1, which is the lowest penultimate in Europe, whose average is 92.6. They highlight the high employability of people with technological knowledge in countries such as Malta (98), Belgium (97.3), or Germany (97.1).

That is, though have a good base of trained employees To develop jobs with technical specialization, companies in Spain do not hire them.

According to the study, the main technological job niche is claimed by specialists in programming, consulting, engineering and architecture technical services, and R&D, while sectors such as telecommunications continue to lose employees.

The report on the state of technological work prepared by UGT also raises a serious salary imbalance received by employees of technology in Spain. The union warns that, as technology companies increase their profits, their employees’ wages will lose purchasing power.

The study shows that this salary imbalance is more than 10,000 euros in relation to the same job in Germany, or 50% lower than in Denmark. To make the measure, the study uses data from the Global Startup Ecosystem Report in 2022, which shows a technology company. In Spain, this gives a salary of 36,000 euros per year for a software engineer in a startup, while an equivalent position in Germany receives 62,000 euros per year, or 74,000 euros in Denmark.

The union highlighted the inflated numbers about talent shortages reported by companies over the years. “We are forced, this time in a more synthetic way, to refute this myth of our time.” According to data from INE, ICT vacancies amount to 9,243 unfilled vacancies. A far cry from the hundreds of thousands that companies suggest.

The report uses data from the survey on the evolution of activity carried out by the Bank of Spain, and although there is an increase in the percentage of companies that have difficulties filling their vacancies, the technology sector registers 44%, compared to 54% in construction and hospitality, or 51% in transportation.

It is remarkable that, when reviewing the latest Catalog of Occupations Hard to Cover, prepared by SEPE, which lists more than 1,000 occupations that are hard to cover,. Among them, there are no vacancies in the technology sector. This shows that for companies covering aluminum, metal, and PVC carpentry positions, it is more complicated than a computer scientist.

The data shows that 77.31% of these “difficulties” are due to “too high salary expectations of applicants.” 72.70% was cited as a result of applicants’ lack of sufficient work experience in ICT, and 66.67% were not covered due to a lack of candidates who did not respond to applications. From the union, they emphasized, “To such an extent that there is a lack of interest in hiring technologists, our labor market is placed in the last position in Europe by companies that take ICT vacancies that are difficult to fill.”
