Springfield Health Department Provides Surgical Masks for COVID Surge

As Omicron spreads through the Ozarks, the Springfield-Green County Health Department is distributing 50,000 N-95 surgical masks to blunt the “unprecedented” spread.

As of Wednesday morning, Green County is seeing an average of 409 positive COVID cases daily – a 62 percent increase from a week earlier.

“As we feared, O’Micron has taken over our community,” assistant health director John Mooney said at Wednesday’s press conference.

“It has also resulted in an increase in hospitalizations. Last week, our hospital partners said the amount of serious illness may exceed their capacity because of how fast these cases are spreading in our community. Since then, Green Hospitalizations in the county have increased significantly. Today’s count showed that 202 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized. Because of this, our hospitals have to make tough decisions, and in some cases, surgeons. Non-emergency services have been suspended to meet the needs arising out of the cases.”
