St Luke’s identifies Teddy Balkind as student killed during Brunswick hockey game in Greenwich

Mark Davis, the head of the school at St Luke’s, wrote to the school community, “There are not enough words for the moment, and I know we will all be as supportive of each other as possible.” Davis said Balkind died “as a result of an injury” at a hockey game in Brunswick. While the school was closed on Friday because of the weather, Davis said it would open in the afternoon after the streets were cleared so that students and staff could gather to mourn.

“While nothing can take away the pain, just being together can comfort us and give us a way to absorb the unimaginable,” Davis wrote.

Greenwich Police said the injury occurred on ice during a 5 p.m. game in Brunswick.

According to a statement from Greenwich Police, during the normal course of the game, “a player from the other team fell into the snow”.

Police Captain Mark Zucarella said: “Another player who was near the player who was dropped, was unable to stop, and collided with the player who fell down.”

Zucarella said the loser hockey player was taken to Greenwich Hospital, and “died as a result of the injury.”
