This week, a man from St. Paul’s Church was sentenced to nine years in prison for illegal possession of firearms and methamphetamine.
Joshua Cameron Haynes, 32, was sentenced by a U.S. federal court by District Judge Donovan W. Frank. Haynes will also serve five years of supervised release.
According to court documents, on March 22, Egan police officers attempted to detain Hanes and arrest him on the basis of an unfulfilled felony warrant.
Haynes, driving a rented Jeep Compass, tried to hide from the officers and shot down one of the units. After several minutes of disregarding police orders, he was taken into custody.
Inside the jeep, police found two bags of methamphetamine weighing 198 grams and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol that was reportedly stolen in Hudson, Wisconsin.
On September 14, Haynes pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm as a felony and one count of possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of distributing it. As part of his request, Haynes also admitted to owning a 9mm high-capacity semi-automatic pistol.
Hanes is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time due to previous felony convictions.
He was convicted of assault in the second degree with a dangerous weapon in 2011; in 2017, he was convicted twice of theft and was convicted twice of fleeing the police. On March 13, 2008, Haynes pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court to assisting Antonio Thelen, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the murder of Sean Gibbs on August 18, 2007, near Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
