Jacksonville, Fla. ( Associated Press) — Doug Pedersen will make his opening play on Friday night in Jacksonville’s presidency game against Cleveland.
The Jaguars’ first-year coach announced Wednesday that quarterback Trevor Lawrence needed live repeats with new receivers (Christian Kirk, Jay Jones, Evan Engram) and a rookie center (Luke Fortner).
“It’s a new plan, it’s got new faces, new people it’s working with and a new center,” Pedersen said. “So just looking at it all together and just wanting to have some crisp plays, some good execution and try to score, try to score some points and take them out.”
Pedersen expects to play “a doubles series” starting against the Browns in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars ousted most of their first-team team after losing to Las Vegas 27-11 in last week’s Hall of Fame game. in Canton, Ohio. Jacksonville did not get on the scoreboard until late in the third quarter and did not find the end zone until the waning minutes. Meanwhile, the defense allowed 159 yards and three touchdowns.
“This week I’m going to start, you know, with a couple series in this football game his feet got a little wet,” Pedersen said. “Nothing crazy, nothing long. But just want to give them the feel of the game and get them out there and get them working in game situations.”
Pedersen will catch a starter – running back James Robinson (Achilles tendon) – as well as rotational receivers Jamal Agnew (hip) and Lavisca Schenault (hamstring). Kirk can sit outside, too. The team’s top free-agent signing sprained an ankle in practice on Monday and was working the side on Wednesday.
Travis Etienne, who missed his rookie year after suffering a leg injury last August, is trailing In Precision, will play his first game since then.
“We’ve seen a lot in practice here, but now you get under the lights and the crowds and all that kind of stuff,” Pedersen said. “It’s a different experience and that’s why you do it, well, why do you practice for all those scenarios. He’s one of those people we want to see.”
Notes: LB Devin Lloyd (hamstrings), Utah first-round draft pick, will not play. Pedersen hopes to return next week. … RT jawans would alternate representatives with a first-team offense against Taylor and Walker Little Brown. This is one of the team’s few early jobs to hold on to camp. … Reserve LT Badara Traore and DE Jeremiah Ledbetter will be missed for the time being, Pedersen said.
