Stephen Curry Shows Midseason Form, Warriors Completed Perfect Precision

SAN FRANCISCO – Stephen Curry was in mid-season form on Friday night’s Warriors preseason finale.

If there was a question, Curry probably cheated on you and dunked a step-back 3 on your outstretched hand. After hitting the second of three trademark triples late in the second quarter, Curry stumbled upon a fan in the courtside seats.

He appeared to limp a bit on the next defensive possession, but Curry probably put to rest any doubts about Jimmy’s ankle when he shoved a Portland defender out of his shoe, then changed another hand as he hit a Leaping for the lay-up, he fell to the floor and a whistle blew, giving him a well-earned foul shot over the made basket.

The Warriors used a scoring attack to easily handle the Portland Trail Blazers, 119–97, and completed their first perfect preseason in franchise history.

Consider Curry’s performance on what’s to come this season.

His 41 points in 30 minutes were the most scored by any player in the NBA this season, and he needed only 19 shots to get there. He finished 7 for 14 from the distance, heating up in the second quarter, when he scored his 15 points off the field at 5-for-5 on a perfect score, and didn’t get out until late in the third quarter.

Curry did not require any additional tuneups before Golden State’s regular season began in Los Angeles on Tuesday, but coach Steve Kerr criticized the team’s conditioning in preparation for next week.

Kerr said the Warriors wanted a “full dress rehearsal” in their final pre-season game, but that was not possible on Friday, as players were unwilling to go. The problem could persist into the start of the regular season, Kerr said.

“To be honest, people are not prepared to play the minutes we want them to play in the regular season,” Kerr said ahead of Friday’s competition.

The five opening Warriors of Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, Kevon Looney and Jordan Poole played deeper in the second half than in any previous pre-season game. In 24 minutes, Poole contributed 16 points, and Green added 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Nemanja Bezelica finished second with 12 points in 21 minutes.

Precision Success

Of course, Kerr’s assessment comes with the caveat that Dubs navigated a preseason, however worthwhile, without losing a game for the first time in franchise history.

Golden State had not finished a season above .500 for three years.

The Warriors started their first two title runs under the current regime with pre-season points of 6-2 and 6-1. But their most recent championship season began with a 2–2 preseason record, and went 3–4 before setting an NBA record with 73 wins (but not the Larry O’Brien Trophy) in 2015–16.

roster spot

Curry wasn’t the only one giving a preview of the regular season on Friday night.

As the pre-season comes to an end, the Warriors’ rotations are getting more attention.

Bejelica and Damian Lee were the first players off the bench, followed by Otto Porter Jr. and André Iguodala. Rookie Moses Moody also saw crucial minutes as he started for the second straight game.

What was mostly absent, however, was Juan Toscano-Andersen, who only entered Friday’s game well into the fourth quarter. No reason was given for their limited minutes prior to tipoff.

Avery Bradley, a veteran competing for a final roster spot, did not play in his first two preseason affairs after coming off the bench as one of Golden State’s first replacements.

Gary Peyton II is Bradley’s top competition for last place, but he didn’t even play in the preseason finale.

He made his debut in Los Angeles on Tuesday night following off-season hernia surgery and contributed 12 points, including some biting stings, but hasn’t been able to play or practice since.

Kerr said the Warriors have yet to decide whether they will fill the final roster spot, which comes at an additional financial burden due to the team’s position at the top of the luxury tax bracket.
