Former Labor Minister Stephen Smith has been announced as Australia’s next High Commissioner to the UK.
Smith served as Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State during the Rudd and Gillard administrations.
Smith was elected to the House of Representatives in 1993 and retired from politics in 2013.

Foreign Secretary Penny Wong said Mr Smith’s appointment reflects the importance of the relationship between Australia and the UK.
“Australia is being represented by people who have distinguished careers beyond public service, such as businessmen and former parliamentarians,” he told reporters in Adelaide on Friday.
The replacement for Arthur Sinodino, Australia’s ambassador to the United States, will be announced at the end of his term in February 2023.
