StubHub will refund more than $3 million to more than 8,500 Colorado customers who purchased tickets for events cancelled due to COVID-19 in accordance with the company’s pre-pandemic refund policy.
According to a press release from the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, StubHub, one of the country’s largest ticket exchange and resale companies, initially refused to pay consumers refunds for concerts, sports, and other events cancelled due to the pandemic.
Colorado and nine other states and the District of Columbia announced a settlement agreement on Tuesday.
“The pandemic has affected all Colorado people, and many of them are looking forward to the cancelled events and experiences as we are all working hard to keep each other safe and healthy,” Attorney General Phil Weather said in a press release. “When the services they pay for are never provided, consumers should not lose their money. My office is committed to protecting consumers, and we will continue to take action to ensure that consumers, just like Stubhub consumers, receive all their money. Refunds owed.”
The settlement ensures that 8,688 Colorado consumers will be refunded $3,120,442.
“According to its’fan protection guarantee’, if their event is cancelled, StubHub will usually provide consumers with a full refund, that is, the purchase price and fees they paid for the tickets,” the press release said. “However, in March 2020, with the large-scale cancellation of entertainment activities, StubHub stopped fulfilling its money-back guarantee, instead telling its customers that they will receive account points equivalent to 120% of their purchase amount for future use. Activities and rejected their request for a refund.”
The press release stated that StubHub finally withdrew its decision in May 2021 because of the ongoing multi-state coordinated investigation.
