A centrist Super Pac support representative. Henry CuellaroA conservative Democrat representing Texas’ 28th Congressional District, is suggesting in a new television ad that Kueller will defend abortion rights, despite opposition from those rights.
group, the Mainstream Democrats have spent $177,000. more than Progressive counsel to strengthen Kueller ahead of the May 24 Democratic primary runoff election for his South Texas seat Jessica Cisneros,
Cisneros, an abortion rights supporter backed by pro-choice groups, have intensified their attacks on Kueller’s record of opposing abortion rights after a leaked draft of a Supreme Court ruling that would overturn the federal right to abortion.
30 second TV spot Mainstream Democrats back down against that criticism in a way that stops being outright lying, but is deceptive nonetheless.
“With women’s rights under attack from extremists, Democrat Henry Kueller has made it clear that he opposes abortion restrictions,” the narrator says in the ad. “Let’s send Henry Kueller back to Congress so he can stand up for us.”
The advertisement cites as its source a Associated Press articles Reprinted by US News and World Report from early May, which reports that Kueller supports allowing abortions in cases of rape, incest, or threats to the mother’s life.
Technically, this could mean that Kueller does not support a “ban” on abortion in all cases, but fails to note that she is the only anti-abortion rights opponent in the House Democratic caucus.
He cast the only vote against a bill that house passed Stopped state governments from banning abortion in September. Democrats have painted the bill, a version of it who failed In a Senate vote on Wednesday, the top court’s Roe v. Wade as a way to codify federal abortion rights before the anticipated reversal of the landmark law, which has guaranteed those rights for half a century.
Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for the Justice Democrats, a left-wing group that supports Cisneros, painted the ad as a sign of frustration on the part of Kueller’s aides.
“Jessica has put her on the defensive and now her billionaire supporters are lying to voters who oppose her reproductive rights about her long voting record,” Shahid said.
Super PAC spokesperson, who is Billionaire LinkedIn co-founder and Democratic megadonor Reid Hoffman, funded in significant part, told HuffPost that the ad drew on a statement Cuellar released criticizing the leaked draft opinion.
“As a Catholic, I do not support abortion, however, we cannot have an outright ban,” he said. “There should be exceptions in case of rape, incest and threat to the life of the mother.”
Cisneros, who unsuccessfully challenged Kueller in 2020, overtook Kueller by 2 percentage points in the first round of the primary in March. The presence of the third Democratic candidate, Tanya Benavides, however, prevented Kueller from achieving an outright majority, prompting an automatic runoff between the top two vote-getters.
Some indications suggest that this month’s leak of a Supreme Court draft overturning Rowe v. Wade may have triggered Cisneros. Internal polling shows Cisneros is ahead of Kueller, according to sources who spoke to Dave Wasserman of Cook Political Report,
Cuellar argues that his endangered brand of social conservatism is the right fit for the predominantly Latino and working-class districts in South Texas. Like many such seats, Texas’ 28th seat shifted significantly in 2020 towards then-President Donald Trump. Although Hillary Clinton led the seat by about 20 percentage points, President Joe Biden won there by only 4 percentage points.
Earlier this month, Cisneros called upon House Democratic leaders withdrew their support for Kueller in the wake of the Supreme Court leak. House Democrats, fearing that Cuellar’s defeat would open the door to a GOP takeover of the South Texas seat, have resisted those calls.
But Benavides, who also supports abortion rights, Supported Cisneros on Wednesday.
