Suspect hospitalized for vehicle theft from bus collision in Oakland; guns recovered

OAKLAND – Four suspects of a Berkeley vehicle theft were hospitalized and three guns were recovered after the stolen vehicle crashed into an AC transit bus in West Oakland on Friday afternoon, officials said.

California Highway Patrol officers began chasing the vehicle in Contra Costa County, but stopped a few minutes before the crash on Tenth and Market Streets, officials said.

The alleged suspects, four men aged 18 to 21, were taken to hospitals, two of whom received serious injuries and two suffered minor injuries, officials said.

Officials said four people, including the driver, were in the bus, which rammed into a house. Officials said two passengers suffered minor injuries. No occupants of the house were reported to be injured.

The CHP said the stolen Toyota suspects were spotted by CHP officers in Contra Costa County around 2:05 p.m. Friday. The car was reported stolen in Berkeley, but exactly when was not immediately known.

The CHP officers started chasing the vehicle, but stopped following it on Highway 24 on the west side in Orinda, officials said.

The CHP said an Oakland police helicopter spotted the car after passing through the Caldecott Tunnel and began following it into the air. The vehicle got off the highway and went on the city streets before coming back on the highway where other CHP officials again started chasing it.

Officials said Toyota exited Interstate 980 on 27th street and the CHP again stopped following it because it was speeding and driving the wrong way. Besides this, the police helicopter was still following him, the CHP said.

A few minutes later, at around 2:20 a.m., Toyota crashed into an AC transit bus on the streets of Tenth and Market, apparently failing to stop for a red light, sending the bus to a home, officials said. Gave. CHP units were the first at the scene and a resident said some officers helped some Toyota men out of the vehicle, which was heavily damaged. All Toyota occupants were treated by firefighters and paramedics before being taken to hospital.

It was not immediately known what he would be arrested for.

The CHP said two handguns and one assault rifle were recovered from inside the Toyota.

The accident closed Market Street for several blocks in both directions for a few hours.

Both the CHP and Oakland Police are investigating.
