Until now, in 2023, 15 teenage pregnancies have been registered in the north of Sancti Spiritus. Of them, four belong to women under 15 years old.
Adolescence is not a good age to have children, said Noeibis RodrÃguez Rojas, counselor of the Maternal and Child Program in Yaguajay.
Although the number of teenage pregnancies in Yaguajay behaves stably about previous periods, so far this year the territory has registered 15 pregnancies of this type, which continues to be one of the unsolved problems in the area and a strong projection of work.
In the statements of Escambray Noeibis RodrÃguez Rojas, counselor of the Maternal and Child Program (PAMI) in the north of Sancti Spiritus, it was explained that this number of teenage births is adjusted to the ages between 12 and 18 years old, a phenomenon that must be removed to guarantee the successful development of this stage of life.
RodrÃguez Rojas pointed out that of these pregnancies registered so far, four correspond to girls under 15 years of age, raising the alarms of the municipal health authorities due to the failures that could cause pregnancy at these ages.
“Adolescence is not the best age to have children. On the one hand, it is a period in which the continuation of studies is interrupted; the girls’ life projects stopped, and, on the other hand, it caused bad indicators of the health of the mother and child, where the low birth weight was the main one, “the source himself clarified.
In the same way, he pointed out that of the four health areas in the territory, Venegas has the most cases of teenage pregnancies recorded so far. He also insisted on the need to maintain adolescent circles in each area and to inform girls about the methods that exist to prevent pregnancies at an early age.
The adviser of PAMI in Yaguajay stated that, although it is a priority for the territory to stop teenage pregnancies if detected, the mothers are given effective follow-up until the end of the pregnancy, which includes everything from the examination of pregnant women in multidisciplinary consultations to timely admission to the Maternity Home.
For his part, he emphasized that it is important to promote the exchange of ideas among this age group about the need to assume sexuality responsibly to improve sexual health and encourage prevention.
