Texas State Police launches internal review of Uvalde school shooting response

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Monday it would review the state police’s response to the Uvalde Elementary School shooting.

It is the first time the department has said it would evaluate its response to the May 24 massacre, for which law enforcement is facing criticism. A lone gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at the school, while it took more than an hour for officers to confront and kill him.

The department told the Associated Press that its investigation will specifically “determine whether there has been any breach of policy, law or principle” in response to its officials. The internal review was launched last week.

The state police investigation comes on the heels of a preliminary 80-page report released by an investigative committee of the Texas House of Representatives, which found one of “extremely poor decision-making” by law enforcement at Robb Elementary School was convicted for. Worst school shootings in American history.

About 400 law enforcement officers gathered in and around the school for more than an hour before the 18-year-old gunman entered the classroom — about 90 of them state soldiers.

An officer from the Uvalde Police Department told investigators that he was aware of 911 calls from inside the classroom, pleading with officers to answer, and yet no one attempted to enter.

Other officers had earlier said that they did not enter the classroom because they thought the door was locked and they did not have the key. The report found that it was unlikely that the door was locked.

On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) called the House report’s findings “beyond disturbing” and said it raises “serious concerns about the response that day.”

It’s a sharp turnaround for Abbott, who, a day after the shooting, praised officials and told the Texans “it could have been worse.”

Abbott said at the time, “The reality is that, as terrible as what happened, it could have been worse.” “The reason it didn’t get worse was because law enforcement officers did what they did: They showed amazing courage by running toward bullets for the sole purpose of trying to save lives.”
