Additionally, the player referenced the growth of Major League Soccer, noting that “MLS teams have been a little better than Mexico’s in recent years.”
Landon Donovan, who is considered the best American soccer player in history, assured this Tuesday that Inter Miami is the best team in the US league, the MLS, with world champion Lionel Messi and the brand new League Cup winner.
“I didn’t think the move at Inter would be so big and early, but it changed from the first minute just because Messi is there,” said the US team’s top scorer in history alongside Clint Dempsey with 57 goals.
Donovan, 41 and winner of four Concacaf Gold Cups, added on Apple TV: “I’m amazed at how Inter are playing. “The team has completely changed; it’s already the best team in the league. We’ll see when MLS resumes.”
Messi will play Cincinnati in Argentina on Wednesday with Inter Miami at 8:30 p.m. in one of the semifinals of the US Open Cup at TQL Stadium in Ohio, while the other will play against Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake.
Donovan, who played for León and the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS in the Mexican league, cited the growth of the American tournament.
“In the last few years, that has changed, and the MLS teams are a little bit better than Mexico’s. The reason for the growth is that everyone wants to play here before the competition was low and so was the money. Now there is a lot of money and it is much better; if it continues like this, the best in the world will want to play here,” concluded the striker, who played in four World Cups in 2002, 2006, and 2010.
