The Chicago Bears contacted at least 15 general managers and 11 coaching candidates for interviews. As they go through this process, we look at each of the potential clients.

The team announced that Todd Bowles was interviewed for the head coach position on Saturday.

Title: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Bowles went 24-40 in his first go-around as New York Jets head coach in 2015-18. The Jets went 10–6 but missed the playoffs during his first season, but then finished in last place in the AFC East each of the next three years. Bowles has been the Bucks’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He was in the same role with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 and 2014, also under head coach Bruce Arians, for whom he played at Temple in the 1980s. Since joining the NFL as second coach for the Jets in 2000, Bowles has coached seven NFL teams.

You must know

Tom Brady wasn’t the only one who led the Buccaneers to Super Bowl victory last season. Bowles’ job of looking after the defense was valuable to the championship path. Inheriting one of the worst defenses in the league when he was hired in 2019, Bowles turned the Bucks’ fortunes around. The Pirates had the best defense in the league in 2020, finishing fourth in sacks (48) and fifth in clearance (29). Bowles’ division is once again in the top 10 this season in these latter two categories.

Chicago connection

This is Bowles’ second interview at the opening of the Bears head coach. He also did so in 2015, interviewing Ryan Pace, who was formally hired as CEO the same day he led the organization discussion with Bowles. Bowles admitted to Bears reporters in 2018 that the whole experience was a bit odd: “I knew (Ryan) wasn’t going to hire a head coach in the first interview in the first meeting when he just walked into the building. It’s just weird that it happened.”

What was said

“He is unique in what he does. Over the years, I have had great respect not only for (what he does) schematically. He does some cool stuff and (gives) the quarterback some trouble. … I have always respected, probably more than anything else, how hard his guys play for him.” — Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich before the Jets-Bucks meeting last month.
