The director of “Silent” told what was the impetus for the creation of his film

This film tells the story of a Tsinghua University student who spent 8 years of his youth behind bars, and the story of an American journalist, fed up with the lies of the Chinese Communist Party, who infiltrated the regime’s meticulous surveillance system and brought the truth back to America. . An intricate story that takes the soul of the whole world is now projected onto the big screen.

After years of making and winning the 2021 Austin Film Festival Audience Award, Silent will be shown in select theaters starting January 21 across the United States.

Based on a true story, Silent follows the experiences of two young couples from Tsinghua University and an American journalist working in China. Faced with brutal persecution of their faith, they willingly sacrificed themselves to bring the truth to the international community.

The film was directed by Peabody Award winner Leon Lee and starred Tony Award-nominated movie star Sam Trammell, Canadian former Miss World Anastasia Lin and four newcomers from Taiwan.

The Chinese-language Epoch Times interviewed Lee on January 7, who shared his filmmaking experience and some behind-the-scenes stories.

“If you feel like our society needs more people to insist on telling the truth, this movie and the choice of main characters can inspire you,” Lee said.

The Austin Film Festival, one of the Oscar-qualifying film festivals, is known as the world’s largest competition for playwrights. The organizer said that more than 6,000 films were presented this year. After careful selection, 9 categories of jury awards and 11 categories of audience awards were finally selected, and “Unsilenced” was chosen as one of the winners.

Lee said he attended the screening of the film at the Austin Film Festival and was privileged to interact with many of the audience.

“From their feedback, I felt that they were deeply moved by this story,” he said. “In such a harsh environment as China, there are still so many people who have the courage to stand up and speak sincerely from the bottom of their hearts in the face of lies and pressure. I myself think it’s really admirable.”

Lee also revealed that his team faced difficult situations during the filming of the film. Because the film’s subject matter is sensitive, there was no way they could go to China to film and set the scenes. Therefore, the team filmed the film in Taiwan.

“But even in Taiwan, due to many influences from China, we have faced tremendous pressure, obstacles and interference. Many cast and crew members were also under pressure in various aspects. When we make this film, we actually relive the stories told in the film,” Lee recalls.

“But after several years of hard work, from writing the script at the very beginning to finally making the film and releasing it, we are very pleased that the film is now available to the audience.”

Li was deeply touched when the real-life Wang (the film’s protagonist) shared his personal story with him. He felt he had an obligation to tell Wang’s story. In a way, “Wang’s spirit served as an inspiration to all of our cast and crew members,” he said. “If he was able to do this in the face of such adversity in China, then we have no reason to give up in a relatively safe environment outside of China.”

Lee believes that the film, although involving a small group of people, carries a deep meaning. How can we remain steadfast in our conscience in the face of adversity and hardship? These themes are timeless and universal, and they truly touch people’s hearts.

He also expressed his gratitude to all the actors. “Many people do not have a deep understanding of the human rights violations going on in China. Only those who have made an effort to understand the persecution will want to take part in the film, and only then will he or she be able to perform excellent roles in the film. It’s not so much that he acts in films, it’s better to say that he also uses this form to make his own voice.”

Silent will be released in 30 US cities on January 21st.

From January 21 to 27, “Unsilenced” will be available at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, California for audiences in the Greater Los Angeles area.
