The Electoral Board of Galicia concluded this Saturday that the president of the Xunta and candidate of the Popular Party, Alfonso Rueda, imposed a ban on electoral matters in a press appearance last week.
The organization supports the complaint of the Socialist Party of Galicia (PSdeG) for the statements made by Alfonso Rueda after the Xunta Council, at the headquarters of the Government of Galicia.
Because of this, he declared that he “performed the ban” established by the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime on actions with allusions to his achievements.
In particular, the PSdeG cited a series of phrases that Rueda uttered in that press appearance where he said that the Xunta “is working” while the Government is “doing nothing” or giving its vision ” as a candidate”, etc.
The Electoral Board of Galicia understands that in that appearance and in answering questions from journalists, the president “can limit himself to fulfill the institutional functions of transparency” and announce the agreements adapted to his Government.
However, phrases such as “asking the people for their trust in management”, together with the statement explaining his purpose as a “candidate”, surpass “these functions” for Electoral Board. “They have an electoral connotation,” says the organization, maintaining that it violates “the principle of neutrality of public powers.”
The Electoral Board of Galicia points out, therefore, the violation of Rueda, although an appeal can be filed against this agreement. For their part, sources from the Xunta defended that Rueda in his press appearances limited himself to answering questions asked by media professionals.
