Taylor Swift’s documentary breaks records in advance ticket sales, forcing the director of The Exorcist to address the premiere in order not to coincide with the same opening day, Oct. 13.
“Look what you made me do,” director Jason Blum joked on his X account, referencing a Swift song title.
Due to the high demand for tickets, the cinema chain AMC and its distributor opened the season with a strengthened system of ticket sales in order to meet the expected strong demand.
AMC also announced this Friday that the film raised $26 million in presale tickets on the day of the announcement alone, the most in this category in the company’s more than 100-year history, surpassing Spider-Man: Homecoming’s 16.9 million in one day in 2021.
Swift’s film will be shown at other cinema chains, such as Regal, so AMC’s number represents a portion of actual box office earnings, which will be higher. This was suggested by movie ticketing platform Fandango, which reported that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” broke its single-day sales record in 2023 and slipped into a list that also includes Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force awakens
AMC said Swift’s film will be showing four times a day in all U.S. theaters Thursday through Sunday, but said capacity will be increased where “necessary” and possible given record sales “less than three hours after tickets are dropped.”
October 13 was also the opening day of The Exorcist: Believer, a new installment in the cult horror film series, but its producer, genre veteran Jason Blum, announced it would push the date back a week.
In his X account (formerly Twitter), Blum ruled out another film tandem with opposite poles like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” and then announced that “The Exorcist” will hit theaters on October 6th.
