The federal government will provide Pearson International Airport with funding of more than $142 million for critical infrastructure work, including funding to begin design work for a proposed connection with the Eglinton Crosstown Line.
Transport Minister Omar Alghbra made the announcement Monday morning, noting that the money would help Pearson invest in the infrastructure needed to help the aviation industry “revive” after damage from COVID-19.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on Canadian airspace and the world’s leading network of Canadian airports, including Pearson, has been hit really hard. But despite the challenges, airports continue to provide essential air services which have been very important during the pandemic,” he said. “The funding I announced today will help Toronto Pearson International Airport invest in the infrastructure needed to help reinvigorate the aviation industry. It will also help maintain safe airport operations for residents and workers in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding communities
The money being given to Pearson is coming from the Liberal government’s $571 million Airport Critical Infrastructure Program, which was launched in 2021.
It will lead to a number of initiatives at Canada’s busiest airport, including rehabilitating the airspace sidewalk, setting up new check-in, boarding and border clearance systems and the running of a COVID-19 testing and screening system for passengers and staff. Includes operating. ,
It will also help the airport “perform technical studies and concept design work” for a proposed connection with the Eglinton Crosstown Line’s planned extension to Rainforth Drive, which is expected to be completed by 2031.
The Greater Toronto Airport Authority said, “This is an important day to move forward, step forward in recovery and also ensure that not only Toronto Pearson but Canada’s aviation sector is once again strong, It’s been incredibly challenging.” President and CEO Deborah Flint said during Monday’s news conference. “As Canada is one of the top growing countries in the G7 by population, we know a lot is expected of our airports, whether it is to address capacity or to meet the expectations that airports have. The experience is green.”
