The five technological proposals of Tigo to the new government

Marcelo Cataldo, president of Tigo Colombia, presented five tasks to improve the connectivity of Colombia and to solve the pending tasks left by President Duque.

“The 5G issue sounds attractive, but the efforts made to use 4G must be finished first,” says its president, “although Colombia has made progress in this regard, it must be taken into account that when turning off 2G and 3G networks, the connectivity solution is fourth generation, because today everything can be done with that connectivity”, explained the manager.

Cataldo emphasized that without a doubt the most important is that the new government guarantees legal certaintybecause telecommunications are planned for 20 years and the dynamics of the market have changed a lot.

The second proposal is focused on the money that is given in consideration for the services rendered, “Fiscal loopholes cannot be closed with spectrum, operators have invested close to 1.9 billion dollars in the last two spectrum auctionsbut the value of spectrum has not gone down, so you have to have a balance, having an expensive spectrum is equivalent to having less infrastructure,” he asserted.

The third point is to keep in mind that connectivity is key to economic reactivation, so the idea is that the 40 percent increase in mobile and fixed traffic can be maintained as the communications industry enables the others.

The fourth point has to do with the compensation to the Futic, because according to the director, the operators in the last 10 years have paid one million pesos and “it is time to modernize those tax charges since there are many errors, because although the Government and the ministry have interesting initiatives, those monies do not have an equitable execution or are not made in ICT”, he said.

This is how the country is connected: more than 75 million cell phone lines

“We want the money that goes to the fund to be applied to ICTs because, although it has an outdated charge in the market, because they charge 4 percent taxes for voice resources and it is not even used that much, charges must be rethought. to close the digital divide,” he explained.

On the point of legal certainty, Cataldo pointed out that having cases and “precedents like Wom, who was allowed to return spectrum for an error and pay a fine, makes the country a place that is not fair for foreign investment. Now there are several documents that would modify the dynamics of the sector such as spectrum caps and Tigo committed to the last auction for 700 million dollars over a 20-year termthings change a lot and it is not a good message to change the rules only for some and at the wrong time,” he said.

For Cataldo, the best option is to think of complete solutions and alliances, to move forward in freeing up network spaces for people’s connectivity, andLast year Tigo shut down 35 percent of the 2G network and this year it plans to do the same.

“The problem with technology and its progress is having a clear motivation, buying 5G spectrum but only to have more speed, it is not worth it when you have people without telephone lines or without connectivity possibilities. This government did things like the ICT modernization law and efforts to close gaps that must endure,” added the manager.
