Valencia’s socialists set their calendar to elect Ximo Puig’s successor. The vote, under the primary formula, will be held on Sunday, February 25, and the congress organized by the party structure will be held on March 23 and 24 in the town of Castellón in Benicàssim. The wish of the former president of Valencia is a quick conclave that will prevent internal struggles from getting out of hand and be resolved before the first quarter of the year. The lack of agreement between the currents has delayed the process until the last week of March, a formula in which critics believe that Puig’s people are trying to buy time.
The Executive this Monday set a date and form for the congressional process, after several tense weeks in the ranks of the Valencian socialists. Since Puig announced his departure on December 16, there have been contacts between at least three PSPV factions to gauge their support. The initial desire for the leadership of Valencian and Ferraz is a unitary candidacy, a unique one for the PSPV: it is in the ordinary congress of 2021, which revalidates Puig for the third time, where there is no alternative candidacy.
In this process, three options were seen to lead the party: Minister Diana Morant, the provincial president of Valencia, Carlos Fernández Bielsa, and the deputy of Congress, Alejandro Soler. They don’t have an official yet, they all agree to respect the internal calendar. Starting this Monday, the leaves are running.
The program proposed by the Executive to the National Committee, which will approve it this Saturday, extends the process until the last week of March. With the three candidates seen, it is expected that there will be a second round of primaries: the first on February 25 and the second on March 3. The Valencian festival calendar – with March full of Fallas and Magdalena festivals -, Semana Santa and the Galician elections in February condition the calendar. There is almost a month between the first vote and the formation of the new Executive, a process in which the sector of Bielsa and Soler will give difficulty to the former president.
The candidates will be officially presented on January 29, if approved by the National Committee this Saturday. The general secretary of the socialists of Valencia is still convinced that a calm process can take place: “They can be positive principals. What is important is the political project,” he said at the end of the meeting, agreeing to the proposal. “I want to have the highest agreement, whatever the path,” continued the socialist leader, emphasizing the message of unity for the party. For his part, he declared that he would limit himself to organizing the congress.
