The lack of rain and the westerly wind worsened the condition of the swamp, with the water brown for months.

The water in the Albufera de València has turned brown and no one knows why. The lake is more saline, has lost capacity and is below its indicated level for months to preserve the ecosystem. The lack of rain and persistent westerly winds pose a serious threat to the ecosystem of the natural park, according to the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation, which urgently met this week with the Administrations involved to agree on an extraordinary water delivery to the wetlands.

L'Albufera De València Is A Natural Area Of Danger Because Of This &Quot;Alarming&Quot; Conservation Status

On Tuesday, the representatives of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation, the Department of the Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana, the Council of the City of Valencia and the representatives of the users of the Acequia Real del Júcar and the Acequias de Quart and Favara met, with the aim of find solutions. in the emergency situation in Lake Albufera. In the meeting, it was agreed the emergency shipment of 6.5 cubic hectometers from the Acequia Real del Júcar concession, scheduled for spring, which was brought forward a quarter due to the lack of rain. This amount, added to the 8 cubic hectometers sent so far, will complete the contribution set for the lake from the savings from the modernization of the mentioned irrigation channel.

Although this entry of water into the lake is planned for spring, the needs of the wetland, given the meteorological conditions, with an almost complete lack of rain in recent months, makes its appointment necessary as a matter of urgency, the Hydrographic Confederation points out. In addition, due to the impossibility of diverting the flows from the discharges, the irrigation users agree to provide an excess of irrigation water in exchange for recycled water from the Pinedo treatment plant through its infrastructure. After the meeting, the Consell committed to create a working group to evaluate the situation from time to time.

The wetland has kept the flood channels to the sea closed since September, despite the fact that it requires constant communication to change the water. Added to the decrease in the level is the brown color that conquered the lake for two months, which still has no explanation. In October, the water began to gradually acquire an orange tone, which has remained so for now. A technical report suggests that this may be due to the change in color of the algae due to the reduction of chlorophyll, which usually gives them the green tone, due to the high and continuous heat of this summer and autumn.

Environmental organizations represented by the management of the natural park consider the situation in l’Albufera “alarming”. SEO-BirdLife, Acció Ecologista-Agró and that led to the intrusion of salt water.

The environmental organizations emphasize that they warn of the allegations presented in the Hydrological Plan, which will be implemented in January 2023, “that the environmental flows of l’Albufera are not sufficient and, above all, that the water needs that set at 210 is not enough. guaranteed. cubic hectometers. Only 14.5 cubic hectometers from the modernization of Acequia Real is real, 7% of the total estimated necessary for the good health of l’Albufera.” In addition, they demand that the environmental water requirements that the lagoon needs to be included in the management plan for this space, must belong to the Natura 2000 network, a mandatory document for many years that has not been , “in violation of European Union. regulations.”

The effects of climate change

On November 24, the Acció Ecologista-Agró organization organized an information session on the effects of climate change on the lagoon. Experts point to the browning of the water as one of the unknown effects, the consequences of which are yet to be seen, and emphasize that well management of the lake water is the best tool to reduce the climate change around it. Another issue that worries environmentalists is the burning of rice straw, an activity that occurs every year and causes a lot of smoke around the natural park and the city.

During his speech, Paco Collado, Devesa-Albufera service technician, emphasized the projects developed on the coastal façade in response to the vulnerability of the natural park to the changes that have already taken place. Specifically in the work done to recover the dune range and increase the protection of the coast against the harmful effects of the sea which, due to climate change, will be greater. Some of these projects have been consumed by the effects of the tide. “From 1948 to 2019, the annual rise in sea level is estimated at 1.6 millimeters per year. However, considering the negative synergistic effect caused by water expansion, this figure doubles. So, from 1923 to 2020, this increase has been 3.3 millimeters per year,” he said.

The trend is alarming because it threatens the ecosystem due to water salinization. Lucía Moreno, a technician for monitoring wetlands in the natural park, points out that it is a first-order climate regulator at the regional level. “Wetlands are among the ecosystems that can absorb the most CO2. However, it is true that this capacity depends on their conservation status. “This is where ecosystem management begins, which goes beyond the preservation of the sandbar. which protects it from the sea, and involves regulating the quantity and quality of water supplies needed by the lake. It adds the need to study and deal with the effects of climate change affecting the water resources, and that “comes in cascades.” The natural park, which is an exception to the deterioration of other areas thanks to the recovery work, is once again threatened.
