The thermal blankets will be used to extend the life of the Humboldt glacier, which is located in the Sierra Nevada in the state of Mérida, in the west of the country and which is affected by climate change, causing high temperatures that cause it to shrink.
Given this panorama, the Ministry of Ecosocialism has dedicated itself to designing a plan that considers the use of thermal meshes and in this way alleviate the dire situation that causes some scientists to call it “the end that glacier in Venezuela.”
In that sense, the Minister of Popular Power for Ecosocialism, Josué Alejandro Lorca Vega, announced that through his social networks they received “a thermal blanket for our Humboldt glacier, with the aim of increasing it, because this is the last one we have left and according to estimates, it is the first of the entire Andean mountains to disappear,” he reported.
He stated that Venezuela applies a pilot plan “where this project is launched throughout the tropics”, for these 35 rolls of 80Kg of the aforementioned thermal blanket “made with polypropylene will be used to place it on the most vulnerable edges of the glacier. The purpose is to avoid the incidence of direct solar rays, which will create a microclimate, where melting processes are delayed,” he said.
It is estimated that if it is used, the warming of the glacier and therefore its melting will be reduced.
The pilot plan includes the University of Los Andes, Climate Crisis Observatory, Probiodiversa and Bolivarian Armed Forces.
It should be noted that glaciers are important for the preservation of life on earth, because they contain reserves of fresh water and that they are still suitable for human consumption.
