THE LATEST: UN: Over 170 people evacuated from Mariupol

The latest developments on the war between Russia and Ukraine:


ZAPORIJIA, Ukraine – More than 170 people have been evacuated from the Ukrainian city of Mariupol after weeks of Russian attacks in an attempt to capture the port town, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani, said in a statement. on Sunday.

The evacuees have been transferred to Zaporizhia, a city in southeastern Ukraine. Lubrani said that more than 600 people have already been evicted from the Mariupol area.

It is the latest effort to rescue civilians from the underground tunnels of the Azovstal steel complex, where Ukrainian forces are trying to repel Russian aggressors.

The evacuations have been coordinated by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
