Electric cars add up to 7.8 million units sold worldwide in 2022. These are the data from L’Argus, a French outlet, which has revealed that all of last year’s best-sellers are fully electric models. The conclusion is one that has been repeated in recent months: Europe is left behind.
7.8 million units. According to L’Argus accounts, this was the number of units sold last year as far as electric vehicles are concerned. If we close the target, then this number amounted to 1.5 million units of electric cars sold on the soil of our continent.
As for Spain, 36,444 electric vehicles were placed in our country, accounting for 3.79% of total car sales. This year the figure is expected to be behind. Currently, according to ANFAC data, 18,043 such cars have been sold at the end of April this year. 67.86% more than in the same period last year, representing 4.90% of the total electric cars sold in Spain.
Tesla and Tesla. Analyzing model by model, from the French environment they reveal a clear winner: Tesla. Elon Musk’s firm has the best-selling electric cars in the world with its Model Y and Model 3. According to data from L’Argus, 747,500 Tesla Model Y units were put on the market. Tesla Model 3 was sold in 482,200 units.
Tesla’s leadership is not accidental. In Europe, this first quarter has managed to set a new milestone: the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car between January and April. This is the first time in the case of an electric car. Also, with both the saloon and the electric SUV out, the brand has started a price war which should push sales even higher.
And China, of course. But if anything leaves us with the image of a best seller in the world, it is the overwhelming dominance of China. The third best selling electric car is a microcar which managed to have 443,400 units in the market. This is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV and it stands out for its small size, which is ideal for the congested streets of Chinese cities.
But, as we move down the list, two manufacturers repeat themselves: BYD and GAC. BYD is already known in our country and the Dolphin, the fourth best-selling electric car in the world, already has prices for Spain. GAC is a manufacturer that promises 1,000 kilometers of autonomy in its electric cars and is hoping for graphene.
Disappeared. But leaving out Tesla and the Chinese manufacturers, there’s only room for the Volkswagen ID.4, which represents the only European manufacturer to feature on the list. With 175,600 units, the electric SUV remained in the middle of the table, specifically at the sixth position.
Overall, the Volkswagen ID.4 has been closer to relinquishing these positions of honor than the podium. BYD Han has closed the 10 best-selling electric models in the world with 116,500 units. The chart shows why BYD has been overtaken by Volkswagen, which has lost the manufacturer’s throne.
Information. The list of best-selling electric cars in the world is a warning of what’s to come. Tesla has managed to dominate a price war that, for the moment, it is winning and Western manufacturers are trying to keep up.
At the same time, China begins to dominate with a position of absolute power that is increasingly ironclad. In the United States they are trying to stop this by attracting investments but in Europe the measures do not exist and at the moment only France is inclined to take protectionist measures.
