The military government of Guinea begins to hold a meeting to form a transitional government

The military government, which overthrew the government of Guinea more than a week ago, began a four-day meeting on Tuesday and said it would form a transitional government.

The military government that overthrew President Alpha Kant said it will negotiate with political, business and religious leaders in the capital, Conakry, to chart a new course for the West African country.

The military government hopes that during the talks, leaders will agree on who will lead the transition, the time frame to complete the transition, and the political and institutional reforms required before the election.

The Economic Community of West African States, which has suspended decision-making power in Guinea, called for a brief transition led by civilians.

Last week, the Guinean Special Forces overthrew the government led by Mamady Doumbouya, a former French Foreign Legion soldier.

The coup was preceded by violent street demonstrations against Comte’s third term in office last year.

The coup was welcomed by Comte’s long-time opponents, including
Cellou Dalein Diallo, the former prime minister, lost to Comte in the past three presidential elections.

National mining leaders also participated in the coup
Doumbouya tried to assure them that he would work hard to prevent unstable exports of its important bauxite and gold.
