The national celebration and Macron’s visit to Indian dignitaries

Undoubtedly, the national holiday, the day before 75 years of total liberation from the British colonial yoke with the adoption of a new Constitution, is the most important event in the last seven years here.

The introduced period begins with great Hindu religious fervor for the consecration ceremony of the god Ram in the new temple built in the city of Ayodhya.

Thousands of participants, including cultural, political, and other religious people in white and orange robes, attended the religious event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron participated as a special guest in the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Republic Day during his two-day visit to India, which he took advantage of to continue deepening the relationship between the two countries.

Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared 2026 the India-France Year of Transformation and promised to draw up a detailed road map, identify priority areas, and involve relevant institutions.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French president’s visit to India closed 25 years of bilateral strategic partnership on a historic note in 2023 and laid the foundation for the next phase of partnership till 2047 and beyond.

In this context, the guest and the Prime Minister of India advocated further deepening the integration of the defense industry sectors of the two countries to identify opportunities for joint design, development, and production to strengthen their military capabilities and become a viable and reliable source of weapons for other countries.

Modi and Macron agreed on the importance of exploiting the opportunities in the space sector of the two countries and emphasized the signing of the Letter of Intent on Defense Space Cooperation.

The two dignitaries expressed their approval for signing a similar mechanism for cooperation in the field of health and medicine, whose purpose is to strengthen collaboration in research and development of medical equipment based on information technology and digital health.

They also welcomed the progress of discussions on a possible memorandum of understanding in priority areas such as hospitality, tourism, energy, the audiovisual sector, and methods of cooperation.

The two dignitaries welcomed the upcoming establishment of India’s first Consulate General in Marseille and an office in Hyderabad in France with the aim of improving people-to-people relations and consular services in both countries.

They also promoted the signing of implementation agreements between the Department of Science and Technology and the French National Research Agency to facilitate joint research on the priorities of the two countries in the areas of energy, applied mathematics, health and science in the sea

They also agreed to promote youth exchanges and links between economic actors in the sports industry aimed at facilitating the training of Indian athletes in French facilities.

In this regard, Macron announced that France will share its experience in hosting the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the context of India’s candidacy to host these events in 2036.

On the other hand, the French president reiterated his intention to create conditions to attract up to 30 thousand Indian students every year to French higher education institutions.

Both sides reiterated the need to deepen scientific and technical cooperation in areas such as coastal ecosystems, blue-carbon ecosystems, fisheries, marine spatial planning, and coastal resilience.

The two dignitaries called for the activation of the Indo-Pacific Triangular Development Cooperation Fund to facilitate the expansion of green technologies developed in the region.

In conjunction, but slightly less publicized, a five-day visit to India was made by the president of the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Subrahmanyan Jaishankar.
