Eugene, Ore. ( Associated Press) — A new obstacle appeared out of nowhere on the steeplechase course at the world championships.
a cameraman.
A world athletics cameraman stepped onto the track, unaware that a live race was going on behind him, in an attempt to take a stunning shot of the triple jump event at the infield on Monday night.
As a group of runners was approaching the cameraman, the runners spread out to pass him and no one was hurt.
“I was a little worried that he was going to dart, one way or another, at the last second. Thankfully he didn’t realize we were there until then,” said sixth-ranked America’s Evan Jagger. That we don’t all pass him.”
Moroccan Soufian Al Bakkali won the race in a time of 8:25.13 seconds.
He was involved in a strange scene, though perhaps not as painfully as it was in the Beijing world seven years ago. Usain Bolt had just won the 200 meters and a cameraman on a portable scooter lost control of the scooter and fell on the track and turned Bolt over. He jumped in and dusted himself off, not a bad one to wear.
World Athletics president Seb Coe said the federation was investigating what happened.
“I don’t want to be careless about these things,” he said. “But these things happen. He really had the presence to recognize what was happening, and he remained steady, which is the most important thing. He didn’t move.”
