Three women were killed in the last three days. The Ministry of Equality confirmed on Monday the sexist nature of these crimes. There were seven women killed by gender violence this month; 47 so far this year, a figure very similar to the one reached by all in 2022, which ended with 49 crimes.
This increase in sexual violence has three epicenters: Cieza (Region of Murcia), Castelló, and Orihuela (Alacant). In the town of Murcian, agents of the Civil Guard found the lifeless body of a woman around 6 p.m. last Saturday in a well located in a mountainous area that is difficult to reach. The body was rescued by members of the Benemérita mountain team.
The victim’s brother reported him missing on Thursday, after hearing nothing from him since the previous day. During the investigation, agents learned that he had been contacted by his ex-partner, despite having a restraining order for abuse.
Cieza added, that two murders that happened last Friday are under investigation. The first record occurred in the town of Alicante in Orihuela, where an 82-year-old man of Norwegian nationality was arrested for the alleged murder of his wife, 76 years old and a British national. The victim had injuries consistent with an assault with a knife.
Shortly, and in this case in Castelló, the National Police investigated the death of a 54-year-old woman whose body was found next to her partner, a 52-year-old man who hanged himself. A new sexist crime has had four women killed by their partners or ex-partners so far this year in the Valencian Country.
Only 20% of those killed reported
The data is overwhelming. Especially if we consider that only 20% of those killed this year reported their partners or former partners. As reported by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday – before knowing the latest crimes – of the nine sex crimes, eight of which were committed in the last month, there were no previous complaints by their victims registered in the Security System. those who were around the murdered women knew the situations of violence these women suffered.
One of the possible reasons was pointed out by the Prosecutor’s Office, which warned that the rise of denialism prevents women from reporting sexist violence. The underreporting of this violence is often a cause for concern among institutions. Now, with the denial within the institutions (five autonomous governments have Vox representation, and in hundreds of municipalities the PP governs hand in hand with the extreme right), this concern is higher than before.
