The offensive launched by PP at the political, judicial, and in the streets against Amnesty Law clashes in private conversations with others COMPANIONSwhere the idea is not so far-fetched: The party of Alberto Núñez Feijóo evaluated this possibility for 24 hours, which means that it was not rejected from the beginning, and now the PP has made it clear that it is ready to grant a pardon for the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, as long as the conditions are set and he repents. This chaos causes its credibility to be questioned because, if the objective is to gain allies for the PP, it studies proposals that undermine other contexts when other parties want to manage the agreements. In this sense, the sources from the Euzkadi Buru Batzar of the PNV discredited the PP for not expressing its position in a “truthful” way and for prioritizing its “partisan” interests in such a way that its status as a state party is “denied.”.
“In politics, you have to take a position, defend it with conviction, and state it clearly and truthfully to the citizens. The Popular Party does not work like this to manage the issue of pardon and amnesty in Catalonia. PP puts partisan interests above citizens and the country he claims to defend. The partisan good comes before the common good, and that is very serious. We understand that its status as a state party was undermined,” they said from EBB because of the interest of the media in knowing their reading.
This controversy began with Puigdemont’s letter to MEPs, in which he assured that, if Feijóo were president, he would not be under investigation. “Everything will be known,” he said as if he were insulting that PP offered him this. Soon after, the PP leaked the idea of a conditional pardon to the press. It is not so clear whether the PP applied the bandage before the injury in anticipation of Puigdemont making a more serious leak. Would the PP have revealed the idea of a conditional pardon if Puigdemont had not said the key in the letter to MEPs? Is this a way to cut off any revelations the former president might make? Until now, PP has only admitted their conversations to address statements and leaks. He had to make some contacts with Junts before his failed investiture.
And, from the PNV, its spokesman in Congress, Aitor Esteban, warned in November that “one day” he will tell what the PP offered to the jeltzales. The PNV does not want to disclose this to the public because, in its case, it does not want to give the option of agreeing to an investment with the PP associated with Vox. In any case, the idea that Feijóo is not president because he does not want to or that he is the only one who does not agree with Basque and Catalan nationalists does not fit into these conversations. After this episode, the way Esteban refers to Feijóo as “Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde” comes to mind.
