The Port of New York and New Jersey will exceed pre-pandemic numbers by 2023

Port of New York and New Jersey 2023 ended with a total number that managed to exceed pre-Covid numbers by 4.4%. December added positive numbers, reaching 633,925 TEUs (351,402 containers), an increase of 3.4% compared to 613,011 (341,108) registered in the same month of 2022. This increased the total Port of NY-NJ in 2023 to 7,810,005 TEU (4,328,153).

Imports also grew in December compared to last year by 7.5%, which amounted to 326,412 TEU (180,534 containers) compared to 303,596 TEU (169,605). In 2023, total imports reached 3,990,270 TEU (2,212,980), a decrease of 16.9% compared to 4,804,436 TEU (2,663,226) recorded in 2022.

Exports in December increased by 1.4% in the same comparison. A total of 104,278 TEUs (56,013) passed through NY-NJ in December, compared to 102,866 TEUs (55,544). By 2023, exported cargo had reached 1,284,976 TEU (693,781), a decrease of 1.1% compared to 1,299,070 TEU (703,472) in 2022.

During the year, the port is the second busiest in the country in loaded imports and exports, handling 5.3 million loaded TEUs throughout the year.

Exported volumes decreased by 1.7% in December to 200,746 TEU, compared to 204,115 in December 2022. A total of 2,512,038 TEUs were recorded in 2023, a drop of 25.4% compared to 3,369,519 TEUs last year in 2022.

December rail volume increased by 9.8% compared to last year’s December figure, totaling 50,442 containers. In 2023, it was 11% less than in 2022. Finally, 30,633 vehicles were transferred to the Port of New York and New Jersey in the last month of the year, a decrease of 19.2%, and in 2023 it will be 12.9% lower than in 2022.
