For months now, Brussels has criticized that up to 40% of violations that occur in the territory of the community go unpunished while they occur in a country other than the driver’s country of origin.
The lack of coordination between traffic controllers in each of the member countries is the cause of this situation, something that not only affects parking violations, but there are others that are more serious such as blood alcohol levels and even accidents that can be left behind. .without penalty.
In this case, the EU has been working for years to coordinate organizations through common computer systems and a community driving license that will be digital. In fact, it will allow to have a point count, so that the withdrawal is effective beyond the borders.
The European Union will start by punishing for the first time the most serious offenses such as alcohol, jumping traffic lights or speeding, something that is already happening in most member countries.
Therefore, if a German driver creates a disturbance in the Balearic Islands, the DGT will be able to pursue him at his home address thanks to a common pan-European file, a system that will greatly improve its effectiveness in aforementioned European driving license. If the fine is not paid, the Government may enforce payment through legal means.
In this case, the European Parliament recently approved by 372 votes in favor and 220 against a project that toughens the rules for reckless driving and that also allows withdrawals of license to be effective anywhere in the European Union.
With this mechanism, the EU also wants to prevent drivers whose license was taken away in their country of origin from getting it in another country to continue driving, which is impossible from now on.
Logically, this soon-to-be-implemented measure will trigger the withdrawal of the driver’s license, from Spanish citizens who have committed a crime in another country and from foreigners who have committed it in Spain.
In one month, no license
The European Union mechanism is thought to take less than 30 days for withdrawals to take effect. Ten initial days for communication between countries, 15 more for the response from the country of origin of the offender and seven for the final communication with the driver’s withdrawal.
Brussels also plans to soon include the serious offenses of driving without a license, certain blood alcohol levels or breaking the speed limit of 50 km/h on the road and 30 km/h in the city.
