The suspect allegedly tried to stage a double murder at a crime scene in a high-rise Auckland building

Auckland. The 32-year-old was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in the murder of a woman and a man in a luxury apartment building in the Uptown area on Thursday morning, authorities said Friday.

Auckland-based Franz Gadien was charged with the murders of 22-year-old Marie Alice Shaw and 44-year-old Jesse Sky Willner, and was specifically charged with personally shooting both victims. Forensic records show that it was Gadient who originally called 911 to report that Willner, the “intruder”, shot and killed his girlfriend Shaw and that he was forced to kill Willner in self-defense.

Police said in court records that Gadient’s self-defense statement contradicted the “physical evidence” at the crime scene. Authorities stated that Shaw lived in an apartment on the 33rd floor at 447 17th Street, while Willner, an Oakland resident, apparently visited the apartment.

Authorities said Gadient and Shaw had been dating for two years and that Shaw did not appear to be the intended target. They believe that Willner was visiting Gadient and during the visit they had a falling out.

Both victims were found in the apartment at about 12:10 am Thursday morning and were pronounced dead on the spot. Shaw was found lying in bed, and Willner was lying on the floor next to the bed, both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

When the police arrived, they noticed a firearm on the coffee table and contacted the man, who was detained but later released. They then found Gadient, who was covered in blood, and shouted to the first man, “Don’t say e …”, according to a police statement filed with the court.

Gadient allegedly claimed that Willner shot the bedroom door, killing Shaw, and then entered the bedroom. He said the two fought in the bedroom and he was able to disarm Willner and shoot him with a pistol, police said.

A witness at the scene said he saw Gadient run into the living room and put a gun to the coffee table, but, according to court records, did not witness the actual shooting.

The motive for the murder was not disclosed.

Murder charges were brought against Gadient Friday afternoon.
